When Something You Write Gets Nominated for a Daytime Emmy

Well … that was an unexpected delight!

Last year producer and director Mary O’Leary asked me to write her upcoming documentary, Dark and Shadows and Beyond: The Jonathan Frid Story. Mary was just the person for the job; she is a multiple Daytime Emmy winner for her career producing soap operas. But … she also worked for Shakespearean actor Jonathan Frid, the man who was vampire Barnabas Collins to an entire generation.

I was one of that generation, and fondly recall racing home from grade school to watch the latest doings at Collinwood, Maine, home to vampires, witches, werewolves and, even, sailors. When Mary and I met at a Dark Shadows event (yup, I’m one of those people…), we got along and I was honored to take part in the production.

You always hope that something you write takes off and does well; I never expected Dark Shadows and Beyond to get a Daytime Emmy nod. I’ll be honest with you: I’m over the moon. I know it’s the show that has been nominated—not me, so I am just thrilled to have participated.  For Mary, who put in so much effort, dedication, and love in make this documentary, I hope it wins.

Johathan Frid as the vampire Barnabas Collins from “Dark Shadows” the original ABC-TV daytime series which ran from 1966-71.

You can still catch Dark Shadows and Beyond: The Jonathan Frid Story on Amazon, AppleTV/iTunes, Google Play and Vimeo on Demand! People who like physical media – like yours truly – can find it on DVD and Blu-ray at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, ShopTCM and Target!
